3 Deep is a luxury branding and communications agency

Extraordinary brands for extraordinary people

In a dual presentation of Chinese art and culture past and present, the 2019 Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series at the National Gallery of Victoria presented China’s ancient terracotta warriors alongside an exhibition of new works by one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists, Cai Guo-Qiang. 3 Deep were commissioned to establish a highly identifiable campaign that presented both exhibitions in accord.

Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality is a large-scale presentation of the Qin Emperor’s terracotta warriors which, discovered in 1974 in China’s Shaanxi province, are regarded as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century and widely described as the eighth wonder of the world. Presented in parallel, Cai Guo-Qiang: The Transient Landscape, sees contemporary artist, Cai Guo-Qiang, create all new art works inspired by his home country’s culture and its enduring philosophical traditions, including a monumental installation of 10,000 suspended porcelain birds.

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is the oldest and most visited gallery in Australia. Situated over two magnificent buildings – NGV International and NGV Australia – the Gallery hosts a wide range of international and local artists, exhibitions, programmes and events; from contemporary art to major international historic exhibitions, fashion, design and architecture.

Cai is among the first artists to contribute to discussions of Chinese art as a viable intellectual narrative with its own historical context and theoretical framework – Alexandra Munroe.
